In 1823–1825, the Aire and Calder Navigation Company acquired the mill and redeveloped the area. This redevelopment included the construction of two large waterwheels, along with the mill building, manager’s house, stables, workshop, warehouse, and workers’ cottages.

Thwaite Mills served diverse purposes, including crushing seeds for oil, grinding imported timber, and processing flint and porcelain stone for pottery. Chalk grinding was another activity carried out at the mill.

The mill was entirely self-sufficient, featuring workshops, orchards, arable land, and pastures. Remarkably, until 1986, Thwaite Mills did not rely on centralised electricity, generating its own power through two waterwheels and a Marshall engine.

The mill ceased operations in 1976 after the dam burst, halting the waterwheels. In 1977, Thwaite Mills Society was established to preserve and restore the site. The museum officially opened to the public in 1990.

Armley Mills: A Mill with History

Armley Mills is mentioned as early as the mid-16th century when Richard Booth, a local clothier, rented the property from Henry Savile. Historical records indicate that by 1707, the site featured fulling mills. One mill operated with two wheels and four stocks, while another milled corn and had two stocks.

Over time, the mills expanded. By 1788, they were equipped with five waterwheels driving 18 stocks. That same year, Thomas Lloyd, a Leeds cloth merchant, purchased the mills and expanded them into the world’s largest woollen factory.

In 1804–1805, Benjamin Gott acquired the mills, but they were destroyed by fire due to their flammable construction. Gott rebuilt the mills using fire-resistant designs, some of which remain intact today.

Gott further developed the business, building several woollen factories based on the mills. After his death, his sons inherited the property.

In 1907, parts of the mill were leased. As technology, markets, and economies evolved, the mills ceased operations in 1971. The property was later sold to Leeds City Council, and in 1982, the Leeds Industrial Museum opened at the site.

Visitors to the museum can explore collections of textile and railway equipment, as well as heavy machinery, offering a glimpse into Leeds’ industrial past.

These historic mills played a pivotal role in developing Leeds’ textile industry. Today, they offer visitors a chance to learn about the city’s industrial heritage and see centuries-old milling techniques in action.

We hope this article was informative and inspired you to visit these historic sites.
