While working, he pursued evening studies in architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1959, Happold moved to New York to collaborate with Fred Severud but returned to London in 1961. Back in the UK, he focused on designing public buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1967, Happold was the head of a department at Ove Arup and Partners, contributing to iconic projects such as the Sydney Opera House and the Pompidou Centre. He also collaborated with Frei Otto, establishing a laboratory to study lightweight tensile structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1976, Happold opened an office in Bath and became a professor of architecture and engineering design at the University of Bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happold&#8217;s accolades include being appointed as a Royal Designer for Industry, serving on the Design Council, becoming vice-president of the Royal Society of Arts, and being named Master of the Royal Designers for Industry.
