Historically, the city’s location on a navigable river and its expanding transport network, including roads and railways, fostered its industrial growth. Today, we explore the industrial processes that shaped Leeds in past centuries, examining its successes and setbacks. Next on leedsname.com.

The Textile Industry in Leeds: A Historical Legacy

Contrary to popular belief, Leeds’ textile prominence began well before the Industrial Revolution. In medieval times, monasteries owned vast sheep flocks, and their wool was processed at fulling mills. By 1324, a fulling mill operated in the city centre, where textile production was carried out manually by artisans. Gradually, mills proved more profitable, requiring fewer workers and yielding greater outputs.

The construction of the Aire & Calder Navigation in 1699 further elevated Leeds’ status. Navigation along the river facilitated coal and wool transport, as well as the import of raw materials. At that time, Leeds spanned just 60 acres and comprised 2,500 homes.

The Rise of Local Markets

By the early 1700s, Leeds hosted two weekly markets for handmade textiles. Initially, these markets were held near Leeds Bridge, but as the number of traders grew, they moved closer to Briggate. These bustling markets became a hub of activity, with inns sprouting nearby to cater to traders and buyers.

In 1711, the First White Cloth Hall was built, offering a dedicated, covered space for textile trade. By 1756, a second hall and the Coloured Cloth Hall had been constructed. Later, in 1775, the Third White Cloth Hall was established, reflecting the growing scale of Leeds’ textile trade. Though a Fourth Cloth Hall was built in 1868, it was eventually demolished due to the industry’s decline.

Further Development of Leeds

The flourishing textile markets turned Leeds into a magnet for workers, spurring population growth. Simultaneously, other industries emerged:

Coal Mining: Middleton Colliery became a key coal supplier for the region.

Chemical, Pottery, and Ceramics: These industries grew alongside glassmaking and iron casting.

Linen Production: A major export to international markets.

Prominent industrialists like Benjamin Gott built iconic mills such as Armley Mills, which became the largest wool factory in the world by 1788. Today, it houses the Armley Industrial Museum. The opening of a railway line connecting Leeds to Liverpool in 1834 further boosted trade efficiency, enabling rapid distribution across the UK and abroad.

However, this industrialisation came at a cost. Factories often employed women and children as cheap labour, with gruelling 14-hour workdays and minimal breaks.

By the late 19th century, the linen industry in Leeds had collapsed. However, the focus shifted from fabric production to garment manufacturing. By 1911, 30,000 workers were employed in Leeds’ clothing industry.

John Barran, the city’s first wholesale tailor, established a clothing factory in 1856. By 1881, he operated 20 factories. Companies like Hepworth’s, founded in 1864, transitioned into retail and became industry giants. Hepworth’s eventually evolved into the globally recognised brand Next.

The transition from textile production to clothing manufacturing marked a significant turning point in Leeds’ industrial history. While the textile industry’s decline posed challenges, the rise of garment manufacturing showcased the city’s resilience and adaptability. Leeds’ legacy as an industrial powerhouse continues to inspire innovation and creativity in modern times.

Leeds has long been synonymous with the development of the textile industry.
