Eight and a half acres of parkland north-west of Leeds hold the surviving stable block of a house begun in 1699, a Victorian-style bandstand, a walled Japanese garden with koi and a red arched bridge, a cricket square in continuous club use, and a playground rebuilt so that children of all abilities can use the same equipment. Nothing is more than a few minutes from anything else.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open parkland and mature trees, with the bandstand as the centrepiece of the main lawn.<\/li>\n<li>A cricket pitch and square, a crown bowling green, and a skate park.<\/li>\n<li>Two playgrounds \u2014 the main inclusive adventure playground and a separate accessible area for the youngest children.<\/li>\n<li>A trim trail set around the edge of the grass for outdoor exercise.<\/li>\n<li>The walled Japanese Garden with its ponds, bridge and planting.<\/li>\n<li>An Indian restaurant, Ameen&#8217;s, operating from within the park itself, which is unusual for a green space this size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Families with children of mixed abilities<\/strong> \u2014 the playground rebuild was driven by exactly this problem, and the equipment was chosen so that siblings can play together rather than in parallel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Runners and walkers<\/strong> \u2014 the mile-and-a-half loop is short enough to repeat and flat enough to be honest about your pace; the Harriers use it every Tuesday evening.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cricket watchers<\/strong> \u2014 a club ground where you can turn up, sit on the grass and watch a full afternoon of league cricket without any arrangement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People who want quiet<\/strong> \u2014 the Japanese Garden is walled and enclosed, and functions as a genuine retreat rather than a themed flowerbed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Event-goers<\/strong> \u2014 the Horsforth Food and Drink Festival, the spring family fun fair, the annual dog show and the brass band concerts all use the park across the year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heritage-minded visitors<\/strong> \u2014 the stable block is a listed fragment of a house begun in 1699, and reading the site around its absence is a short but rewarding exercise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits in Horsforth, roughly six miles north-west of Leeds city centre. Horsforth has its own railway station on the line north from Leeds towards Harrogate, with trains around every half hour; from the station it is about a mile and a half, or a fifteen to twenty minute walk on largely flat ground, into the park. By bus, service 50 runs between Horsforth and Leeds and continues east across the city, and service 33 also serves the area; journeys from the city centre typically take twenty to thirty minutes. Free parking is available nearby. Entry to the park is free, and the grounds are open daily year-round, with sports facilities, the restaurant and event marquees keeping their own hours. An hour covers the loop and the Japanese garden; a family afternoon with the playground and a cricket match easily fills three or four.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is when the park is at its most social: the family fun fair traditionally lands in the April to May window, and the cricket season begins, so the grass fills up after months of being empty. Summer is the park&#8217;s peak \u2014 brass band concerts at the bandstand, full Saturday cricket fixtures, the Japanese garden at its densest and greenest, and long light evenings for the Harriers. Autumn brings the mature parkland trees into colour and the Horsforth Food and Drink Festival into the calendar, while the cricket square is put to bed. Winter is bare and often muddy underfoot away from the paths, but the bones of the site \u2014 the stable block, the bandstand, the enclosing walls of the Japanese garden \u2014 are far easier to see without leaves, and the perimeter loop stays walkable.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Horsforth Hall was begun by John Stanhope (1678\u20131736), who referred to building it in a letter dated 22 May 1699, shortly before his twenty-first birthday; the stable block that survives carries a datestone of 1707. The house passed down through Stanhope generations and was let to a succession of wealthy tenants \u2014 merchants, manufacturers and military officers \u2014 before becoming structurally unsafe and being demolished in 1953. The park itself predates the demolition by two decades. In 1930 the industrialist William Mathieson (1852\u20131943) offered to buy the hall and its grounds and hand them to the council; the offer was accepted on 24 February 1930, and after landscaping the park was opened by Mr and Mrs Mathieson in 1932. The Japanese Garden was added much later, in 1987. The volunteer story is equally specific: the Friends of Horsforth Hall Park were first formed in 1995 out of local dissatisfaction with the park&#8217;s condition, disbanded in 2016, and reformed in 2019 to fund all-abilities replacement play equipment. In 2023 the group became a registered charity.
