Meanwood Beck cuts through it, stone bridges cross it, and the whole park sits on the Meanwood Valley Trail \u2014 a seven-mile route that starts on Woodhouse Moor at the edge of the city and carries you out through woodland and old millscapes towards open country. The southern half is mown grass with tennis courts, a bowling green and a caf\u00e9; the northern half is proper oak and hazel woodland with wild garlic and bluebells and a beck loud enough to hear before you see it. It has an American garden laid out in the 1830s, a memorial avenue of forty-eight oaks, and a bridge that local tradition says was built from stone off the Bunker Hill battlefield.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meanwood Beck<\/strong> \u2014 the spine of the whole site, crossed by stone footbridges and followed by paths on both banks; kingfishers and grey wagtails are regularly recorded along it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Oates bridge<\/strong> \u2014 erected by the family of Lawrence Oates and said to have been built with stone from the Bunker Hill battlefield, a nod to the family&#8217;s support for American independence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The war memorial and the oak avenue<\/strong> \u2014 a memorial near the entrance commemorates forty-eight local men lost in the First World War, and in 2014 an avenue of forty-eight oak trees was planted on the western bank of the beck to match.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Mill Hill Chapel columns<\/strong> \u2014 Grade II listed columns salvaged from the former chapel and re-erected in the park, an odd and rewarding thing to come across in woodland.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The industrial remains<\/strong> \u2014 millstones, quarry faces and the remnants of a First World War observation bunker, all left in place as the valley&#8217;s working memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Meanwood Valley Trail<\/strong> \u2014 seven miles from the Henry Marsden statue on Woodhouse Moor, along Woodhouse Ridge, through this park and past the disused Seven Arches aqueduct towards Golden Acre Park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park divides cleanly in two, and knowing which half you want saves time. South is open, sunny and equipped; north is shaded, uneven and quiet. Between them runs the beck, and beyond the north-western boundary the park slides straight into The Hollies without a fence to tell you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open grassland with tennis courts, table tennis, a bowling green and a basketball court.<\/li>\n<li>A children&#8217;s playground and picnic areas within easy reach of the caf\u00e9.<\/li>\n<li>Woodland of oak and hazel carpeted in spring with wild garlic, wood anemone and bluebells.<\/li>\n<li>Part of the Meanwood Valley Local Nature Reserve, taking in woodland, meadow, lowland heath and two watercourses \u2014 Meanwood Beck and Adel Beck.<\/li>\n<li>The Hollies next door: sloping woodland thick with rhododendrons and azaleas, and gardens holding the National Plant Collection of Philadelphus.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwood Valley Urban Farm nearby, a twenty-four-acre city farm established in 1980 with animals, crops and a demonstration of organic growing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Long-distance walkers<\/strong> \u2014 the park is the natural staging point on the Meanwood Valley Trail, whether you are joining it, leaving it, or turning around here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife watchers<\/strong> \u2014 the beck sections repay patience, with kingfishers and grey wagtails regularly seen and otters reported in the valley.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 playground, caf\u00e9, flat grass and a shallow beck with bridges, which is a combination small children rarely turn down.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring botanists<\/strong> \u2014 the woodland flora is the reason to come in April and May, and the surviving American garden planting along the beck adds a nineteenth-century layer to it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Casual sport players<\/strong> \u2014 tennis, table tennis, basketball and bowls, all in the open southern half.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History readers<\/strong> \u2014 abbey land, an 1830s private estate, a war memorial, chapel columns and quarry bunkers inside one boundary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Meanwood is a north Leeds suburb roughly four miles from the city centre, and the park sits at its upper edge where the built-up area gives out. Buses 28 and 38 from the city centre stop closest to the park, with services 24 and 26 also serving the wider Meanwood corridor; from the nearest stops it is a walk of a few minutes. There is one car park on site with two accessible bays. Entry is free and the park is open year-round. On accessibility: every entrance is wheelchair-accessible and the main paths in the southern half are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, but the woodland paths in the north are uneven, steep in places and often wet \u2014 and there are no accessible toilets on site. Budget an hour for the open half, two to three hours to add the woodland and the beck, and a half day if you are walking a stretch of the valley trail.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the peak and it is not close: wild garlic, wood anemone and bluebells fill the northern woodland through April and May, and the beck runs high and clear. Summer shifts the centre of gravity to the southern half \u2014 tennis, picnics, the caf\u00e9, and shade under mature oaks when the open grass gets too hot; the woodland is at its densest and quietest. Autumn is the colour season along the valley, with the oak avenue and the older parkland trees turning, and it is the best time for a long walk out along the trail when the paths are still firm. Winter is muddy in the woods and worth boots, but the bare canopy exposes the valley&#8217;s structure \u2014 quarry faces, millstones, the bunker remains, the line of the beck \u2014 and the memorial planting reads much more clearly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The land on the eastern bank of Meanwood Beck once belonged to the great estate of Kirkstall Abbey and was farmed by the Whalley family as abbey tenants; they bought it outright at the Dissolution of the monasteries. In 1834 it was purchased by Edward Oates, who laid out an American garden \u2014 a collection of North American shrubs and trees, then highly fashionable \u2014 along the beck. His grandson was Captain Lawrence Oates, who died on Scott&#8217;s expedition to the South Pole in 1912; the family had earlier supported American independence, which is the context for the tradition that the bridge they erected in the park was built of stone from the Bunker Hill battlefield. The estate passed to Kitson Clark in 1917 and was acquired by Leeds Corporation in 1954, at which point it became the public park. The war memorial near the entrance names forty-eight local men killed in the First World War, and in 2014 forty-eight oaks were planted along the western bank as a living counterpart. Elsewhere in the grounds stand Grade II listed columns from the former Mill Hill Chapel. The park is managed by Leeds City Council with the Friends of Meanwood Park and the Meanwood Valley Volunteer Rangers, and it forms part of the Meanwood Valley Local Nature Reserve. One more Leeds footnote: J. R. R. It is a lovely green oasis just a stones throw from the bustling city.
